Cavities And Tooth Decay Tooth decay occurs more commonly in children than adults. Whenever we eat anything, small pieces of food are left sticking to our teeth. If the teeth are not brushed regularly and properly, the leftover food particles in the mouth give rise to bacteria. These Bacteria are present in the plaque that is a soft substance and develops naturally on our teeth and they produce acid that destroy the enamel,  the protective layer of our teeth. Thus, our teeth start decaying. It also causes holes or cavities in the teeth and produces bad smell and toothache. When the tooth is badly damaged it begins to shake.
